Last week I was looking for a great all-you-can-eat hotel restaurant to celebrate my birthday when I got a sight of two great deals in MetroDeal (skin-flint alert!). One was for The Cafe in City of Dreams Manila and another for Cafe 1228 in the New World Hotel in Makati City. Since it was the middle of the week and wanted to avoid the traffic, I went for the one nearer to my house: the New World Hotel’s Cafe 1228.

New World Hotel is located at Esperanza Street corner Makati Avenue. It is very accessible because it’s just in front of Greenbelt 3.

We arrived in the café five minutes earlier before the dinner service starts. The receptionist escorted us to our table. I was surprised that there were actually not much people. Café 1228 is not that big in terms of seating capacity compared with the other hotel buffet restaurants like The Spiral of Sofitel Philippine Plaza. That’s why it was very easy to see how packed the area was.

I loved the soft lighting on the tables. Perfect place for a romantic date. What I didn’t like about the setup though was that the utensils were directly placed on the table.

There were lots of food to choose from. That’s why I decided to not review everything and just recommend those really nice ones.

I would definitely love to have another bowl of the risotto – it was wonderfully cooked and seasoned. All of the varieties of the pizza were good. Another amazing dish was the Pork in Red Wine Sauce.

The siomai was also fantastic – meaty and less starchy. For the dessert, I would say the suman sa lihia and leche flan.

Some runner-ups: crispy pata, adobo rice, beef in horseradish sauce (beef was so tough but the sauce was great), sans rival (lacks the crunchiness I expected from it).

The best part of the experience was the unlimited shrimp and crabs – both best to be tossed on garlic and butter.

Few things that I don’t like with the food: (1) there were dishes with tough meat like the bistek tagalog and beef in horseradish sauce, (2) roast meats were served cold, (3) the ice cream tasted like Selecta.

Note: The (overpriced) drinks are not covered by the buffet price.

The Verdict

There are few great dishes this hotel cafe serves, and of course, the unlimited shrimp and crabs. But overall, I think that the price of Php 2,499 is not worth the experience. To think that I paid almost only half of the actual price because of the voucher, I was still disappointed. I could use the money that I would pay for this cafe on other cheaper all you can eat restaurants like Dad’s and Vikings with better food quality and more food choices.
